Dual-Use Goods

The European Commission defines dual-use goods as products and technologies normally used for civilian purposes but which may have military applications. If the products were specifically designed for military purposes they are called military goods. Both dual-use and military goods are also referred to as strategic goods.

Shipping strategic items are subject to very strict international regulations and often requires an export license. Violating these regulations is considered to be a criminal offence. Therefore it is important to carefully identify dual-use or military goods.

As an exporter of goods or a service provider to an exporter, you are asked to provide a written declaration that states whether your shipment contains dual-use or military goods.

Because Iran is not complying with its international obligation, the EU has adopted restrictive measures against Iran. These restrictive measures are both economic and financial sanctions and they have been in effect since 2011. The measures are extended yearly, which was recently done. The measures are now in place until April 13th, 2020.
